As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline,
and do not resent his rebuke,
because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
as a father the son he delights in. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one. Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. A fool spurns a parent’s discipline,
but whoever heeds correction shows prudence. To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
